A pair of large lacquered wood figures of luohans

Late Ming Dynasty
Each seated figure naturalistically carved with hands raised, wearing priests' robes draped in loose folds across their bodies and over the edges of the bases, the bald heads with furrowed brows, pendulous earlobes and expressive faces, the eyes and lips picked out with red and black pigment, covered overall with a dark russet-colour lacquer with extensive traces of gilding.
73.5cm (29in) high (2).
