Footnotes
Provenance: an English private collection
Rehe is the traditional name of Chengde, Hebei Province, named after the local Rehe river (so called 'hot river' as the river water did not freeze in the winter). In 1703 the Kangxi emperor chose Chengde as the location for his Summer residence, known as Bishu Shanzhuang (The Mountain Resort), which was subsequently used by the Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors to avoid the summer heat of Beijing. Therefore, the inscription on the base of this figure of Damo connects it to the Imperial Chan Buddhist ritual within the Mountain Resort during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor.
