A rare large bronze baluster vase

Qianlong, dated by inscription to AD 1760 and of the period
The baluster vase cast in relief with a pair of gilt mythical-beast mask handles set on a border of pendent stiff leaves, archaistic designs and key-fret borders, rising to the tall waisted neck and galleried rim with a key-fret band, the splayed foot with a key-fret border, the underside cast with a three-line inscription reading Qianlong wuchen zhong chun [] [] sheng hui chen wan.
62.3cm (24½in) high.

Compare a related pair of bronze baluster vases (54cm high), decorated in archaistic designs, Yongzheng six-character marks and period, illustrated in P.K.Hu, Later Chinese Bronzes: The Saint Louis Art Museum and Robert E. Kresko Collections, St Louis, 2008, Catalogue no.32, where the author notes that these vases belong to a type made for use in the Qing palaces or for presentation to important temples.
