Of squat ovoid form, the shoulder ornamented with a simple design of overlapping beads inlaid in copper studs, draping over the shoulder to form a geometric pattern, the base with chiselled signature Masahiko; with tomobako, the inside of the lid signed Masahiko with seal Masahiko. 29.2cm (11½in) high. Masahiko Katori (1899-1988) graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and worked in Tokyo. He was a member of the Japan Arts Academy (the successor to the Pre-war Imperial Arts Academy) and was honoured with the designation of Ningen Kokuho (National Living Treasure) in 1977. His work is in the collections of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art and The Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art.
The artist is perhaps best known for his 'Friendship Bell' which was presented by the citizens in Yokohama to San Diego in May 1958 as part of the Centennial Celebration of formal relations between Japan and the United States.
