Little is recorded about Yotsuya Masami, which is surprising given the extraordinary quality of his work; he was also known as Yotsuya Gozan and graduated from Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1899. Other metal works by the artist are in the collection of the Museum of Tokyo University of the Arts.
The artist is probably that erroneously recorded as Masayoshi (an alternative reading to the same Chinese characters) by Wakayama Takeshi, Kinko jiten (A dictionary of metalworkers), Token Shunju Shinbun-sha, Tokyo 1999, p.827.
