Each of tapering ovoid form with flared and stepped necks, finely decorated with contrasting scenes of Matsushima Bay in nukibori, kebori, ishime texturing and inlaid in gilt, shibuichi, and silver takazogan, one vase showing a pair of hamachidori perched on a rock at low tide, beside pine trees along the shoreline in the foreground; the other depicting a number of boats sailing on calm waters, the base of both vases with chiselled signature Nanzan kinkoku; with two wood stands and wood storage box. Both vases 33cm (13in) high. (5).

松島図銀花瓶 一対 清水南山 大正時代
Born in Hiroshima prefecture, Shimizu Nanzan (real name Shimizu Kamezo), studied metal casting at the Tokyo Bijyutsu Gakko (Tokyo University of the Arts) where he was a pupil of Kano Natsuo (1828-1898). After he graduated in 1896, he also later became a professor there. Later, he was accorded the honour of Teishitsu Gigeiin (Artist of the Imperial Household). Nine of the artist's metalworks are in the collection of the Museum of Tokyo University of the Arts.
The artist is recorded by Wakayama Takeshi, Kinko jiten (A dictionary of metalworkers), Token Shunju Shinbun-sha, Tokyo 1999, p.1143, where he is noted for excelling at the katakiribori technique.
