茄子形赤銅香炉 佐伯義考 明治時代
Despite the high quality of this piece, little is known of Saeki Yoshitaka, a pupil of Shoami Katsuyoshi (circa 1890-1900), other than that he lived in Kyoto and Okayama and adopted the go Yoshitaka from 1904. Certainly as represented here, he successfully emulates his Master's ability to adapt the Japanese tradition of miniaturist naturalism, exemplified particularly in netsuke and sword-fittings, to the creation of large-scale decorative sculptures for the Western market.
Compare with an iron koro and cover in the form of a roof tile by the artist, exhibited by Malcolm Fairley, London in November 2007, illustrated, Japanese works of Art, no.16.
