The silver cockerel standing on the top of a drum, set on a four-legged stand, the body of the drum of shakudo and gilt carved with a mokume design in gold nunome-zogan atop of which trailing vine are applied in silver, gilt, copper and shakudo takazogan, the ends applied in silver and gilt takazogan with a three-clawed dragon clutching a tama among clouds, the edges of gilt applied with shakudo studs, the legs of the stand decorated in chinkinbori with karakusa, the base signed in a gilt square reserve Katsuhira koku; with wood storage box. 36.5cm (14 3/8in) high. Hagiya Katsuhira (1804-1886) is one of several important metal artists who worked in the Mino domain, about seventy-five miles to the north-east of Tokyo, in the late Edo Period. He is particularly famous as having been the teacher of a number of leading figures in the Meiji Period craft world including Unno Shomin.
