Eijiro Kawamura (Fujiwara Kanenaga's real name) was an accomplished swordsmith and metalworker. He experimented with the then known metallurgic properties of chromium and nickel alloy to prevent swords from corrosion in the salt-air environment of naval use and to cope with army problems of having to maintain sword blade surfaces in combat conditions.
