Decorated with a shoal of sturgeon-like fish modelled in low relief and painted in underglaze-red and grey and lightly incised with water reeds, signed with impressed seal Sozan; with tomobako titled and signed by the artist Sozan with impressed seal Sozan. 19.2cm (7 5/8in) high. (2).

The first Suwa Sozan (1851-1922) specialised in celadon-glazed ceramic carving and was appointed as an Imperial Artist in 1917. Compare with a virtually identical vase attributed to Suwa Sozan I, in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection, Meiji no Takara, Treasures of Imperial Japan, Ceramics part I, Porcelain, illustrated no.106.
