Each of thick bamboo form, with green-glazed stems to one side, bearing a gold-splashed ground and painted in enamels with sparrows flying and pecking around clumps of peonies, signed Dai Nihon, Kitei sei, Arensu-sha, Tsukiji 41. Both 30.5cm (12in) high. (2).

Wake Kitei IV was a Kyoto ceramicist and his works were exhibited in domestic exhibitions as well as international exhibitions including Philadelphia in 1876, Paris in 1878 and Sydney in 1879. The pair of vases illustrated here were commissioned by the Tokyo branch of the German Trading Company Arensu, located in Tsukiji.
