Attributed to Hara Zaisei (d.1810), early 19th century
Of rounded rectangular form, the shiro-nuri ground decorated in low relief with formalised roundels over a chequered ground, some of the squares rendered in red, blue and green, the rim, underside and interior painted gold, unsigned; with tomobako titled Arare (hail) and inside of the cover with a title slip inscribed by the artist Hara Zaisei sei with seal Hara [...] Chido. 5½cm x 20½cm x 17½cm (2 1/8in x 8 1/16in x 6 7/8in).
