A fine gold lacquer shodana with scenes of Yoshino and Tatsutagawa

Second half of 19th century
A magnificent lacquer display cabinet supported on four bracket feet comprising sliding doors and a pair of hinged cupboards, the fronts of the sliding doors embellished with a traditional continous landscape view of Yoshino whilst the fronts of the bottom cupboards portray the landscape scene surrounding Tatsuta river, the inside of the doors of the cupboards inlaid respectively with a metallic crescent moon and sun above foaming waters, the lacquer decoration carried out in gold and silver hiramakie and takamakie, red and black lacquer, with details of kirigane and gyobu and inlays of shell, the open staggered shelf areas, the top and sides of the cabinet all embellished with seasonal floral roundels on a mura-nashiji ground; the thinner borders composed of the hanabishi pattern inlaid in gold foil, applied throughout with silver fittings engraved with sprigs of plum and maple, the handles of the sliding doors in the form of silver maple and cherry blossoms; unsigned, with original wood storage box. 87½cm x 38½cm x 91½cm (34½in x 15 1/8in x 36in).
