Footnotes

蓮図木地蒔絵硯箱 古満(福島)泰哉 明治時代

The first character of the signature is identical to that used by Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903), the leading pupil of Shibata Zeshin, and it is therefore likely that Taishin was in turn, Taisai's Master. Certainly, the design of the box as presented here is very close in texture, composition and treatment to both artists. Taisai is recorded by E.A. Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists, p.280.
