Rimpa School, mid 19th century
A pair of two-fold screens in ink and colour with kirihaku on silver paper ground, one screen depicting wild flowers of Spring and grasses including tanpopo (dandelion), tsukushi (horsetail), botan (peony), zenmai (royal fern), the other with Autumnal flowers including asagao (morning glory), ominaishi, kikyo (bellflowers), fuyo (confederate rose), both signed Eihoku Oitsu with seal. 146.2cm x 155cm (57½in x 61in). Little is known about the artist other than that he died prematurely at the age of thirty-six and that he succeeded to use the name Ugean III of which Ugean I was the go for the Rimpa master Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1824).
The artist's famous work Nehanzu, painted on kakejiku is in the Collection of the Edo Tokyo Museum, Japan.
