A pair of six-fold screens painted in ink, slight tarashikomi and colour on silver paper ground, one screen depicting two Mandarin ducks resting beneath flowering white plum on rockwork overlooking a river, signed with seal; the other with three small birds flying towards kumazasa growing against the tree trunks, signed Kazan with seal Kazan. 120½cm x 267cm (47½in x 105 1/8in). Born in Hiroshima, little is known about Yoshida Kazan other than that his real name was Reiichi and he studied painting under Araki Juppo (1872-1944), who was particularly well known for his mastering of kacho-ga (flower and bird paintings).
