Wakeno Kiyomaro (733-799) was a high ranking official in the service of Emperor Shotoku to whom he was devoted and evinced unswerving loyalty during a period of uncertainty and rebellion. As a result, he is often featured in paintings as the symbol of a paragon of virtue.
