Kakejiku, in ink, colour and gold on silk, depicting two warriors on horseback, Minamoto no Yoshitomo being chased by Taira no Shigemori as they ride past snow-laden trees from the 'Taikenmon' scene in Kyoto, in the Tale of Heike; with tomobako titled Taikenmon no zu and signed by the artist Chokusai dai with seal Chokusai. 140cm x 50cm (55 1/8in x 19 5/8in). Born in Nara, Chokusai's real name was Naojiro. He learnt under Fukada Chokujyo (1861-1947) and Hashimoto Gaho (1835-1908) as well as studying the doctrine of Nichiren Buddhism with Tanaka Chigaku (1861-1939). He also became a pupil of Yamamoto Shunkyo (1891-1933), exhibiting his Buddhist works at the Bunten and Teiten.
