Renzan was born as Toku or Shōtoku in 1805. He lived in Kyoto and was adopted into the Kishi family. He trained in the studio of Kishi Ganku (1756-1838), his father-in-law, together with Ganku's son Kishi Gantai, Yokoyama Kazan, Minwa Bumpō and Shōdō. Together they formed the second generation of the famous Kishi school. Of all the followers of the Kishi school Renzan has the greatest reputation in Japan.
