東海道図画帖 北斎様式 明治時代
The Tokaido road was an extremely popular subject matter for artists as travel between cities became both safe and more efficient under the rule of the Tokugawa shoguns in Edo Japan. Reasons to take a trip were appealing to all levels of society and included the prospect of employment, trade, religious pilgrimage and official duty.
