Depicting the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat by Charlotte Corday, Charlotte fashionably dressed, her tall hat tied with a green ribbon matching the underskirt just visible beneath her apron, a knife in her right hand, the unfortunate Marat on the ground beside her, bleeding profusely from a wound on his chest, the marbled rectangular base inscribed 'The Assassination of MARAT by CHARLOTTE CORDE of Caen in Normandy 1793', 34.5cm high, impressed LAKIN AND POOLE (restoration to his left hand and her arms, minor loss to the plume in her hat)

The murder actually took place in Marat's bathroom but has been relocated by Messrs Lakin and Poole, presumably on the grounds of propriety
