A Swansea vegetable tureen and cover and a platter

circa 1817-20
Richly decorated in Japan style with the 'Gazebo' pattern, a fisherman beside a stylised pavilion, within a river landscape, the border with arched panels of flowers and foliage, the tureen and cover of quatrelobed form with a rare gilded pomegranate finial, 24cm wide (some crazing), the platter of octagonal shape, 36cm wide (slight wear to rim) (3)

Footnotes

In common with many other pieces of Swansea dinnerware, these pieces are likely to have been made in the Bevington period. Vegetable tureens normally bear a pineapple finial and the large gilded pomegranate seen on this example is most unusual. The same finial is seen on a 'Gazebo' pattern soup tureen and cover illustrated by Jones and Joseph, Swansea Porcelain (1988), p 103
