A rare Derby group

circa 1775
Of charming small size, a shepherdess seated on the irregular grassy base, a lamb on her lap, embraced by the shepherd who stands beside her, his dog seated beside him, their costumes painted in attractive pale colours with delicately patterned fabrics, 13.5cm high, patch marks, incised 'No 73', 'N and 'H' (minor losses to leaves and petals, his crook restored)

Footnotes

Another example in the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated by Arthur Lane, English Porcelain Figures of the 18th Century (1961), pl 70A. Peter Bradshaw suggests that the group was inspired by an engraving after the painting by Francois Boucher entitled 'La Mouton Favorite'. See Derby Porcelain Figures (1990), p 231
