Attributed to J J Spangler, the young woman dressed in 18th century costume, holding the arm of her blind father who wears Classical robes and a turban, standing together on a circular base encrusted with modelled flowers, 25cm high, incised crown, crossed baton and D mark and model number 370, the interior of the base incised with 'repairer's marks' of L and a triangle (his left hand lacking, her right hand restuck, other minor losses)
Footnotes
Model 370 was listed by Haslem as Belisarius and his Daughter and attributed to Spangler. A different model is known with the incised model number 392 showing another blind figure led by a child. It is likely the two versions were sold as a pair and this has led to confusion over the model numbers. A later, coloured version of the present group is illustrated by John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain (2002), p. 136 bottom right. The 1783 sale catalogue of stock from the Chelsea Porcelain Factory included 'A beautiful large group of Belisarius, in artificial stone £1 5s 0d and moulds of ditto £1 2s 0d'. These were bought by Mr Lygo.
