A Caughley basket

circa 1785
Of oval shape, the sides pierced to simulate basket work, a floret applied at each intersection, the entwined handles applied with flowers, 'Hot Cross Bun Buds' and leaves at the terminals, the interior printed with the 'Pinecone' pattern, a painted formal border below the rim, 19cm wide, printed C mark

Footnotes

A very similar basket is illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Caughley and Worcester Porcelains, pl 90, alongside related wasters from the factory site. The basket is also marked with a relief-moulded 'IT', probably for the modeller John Toulouse
