A very rare Caughley pounce pot

circa 1780
Of 'bobbin' shape with a swelling centre and a spreading rim and foot, the dished top pierced with holes in a formal pattern, the sides printed in blue with floral sprigs, within hexagonal cell borders, 9cm high, printed C mark

Footnotes

A very similar pounce pot was sold in these rooms on 2 December 2009, lot 161. Caughley pounce pots appear to have been thrown and finely turned and are therefore quite varied in form. Two examples of bobbin shape are illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Caughley and Worcester Porcelains (1969), pl. 162. Both of these use patterns also found on inkwells. The example on the right in Godden's illustration matches the pattern on the present lot and a corresponding inkwell is shown in pl. 127.

Saleroom notices

Please note that there is a fine crack amongst the pierced holes in the top of this pounce pot
