A rare Worcester sparrow beak jug

circa 1770
Of slender form with a grooved handle, unusually painted with European and Chinoiserie style decoration, a spray of European flowers including a rose and a variegated tulip below the spout, a panel around the handle painted in Chinese style with a puce monochrome river scene reserved on a ground of dense gilt scrollwork, 9cm high (small chip to spout)

Footnotes

The combination of European flower painting and a Chinoiserie landscape is most unusual. A closely related flower spray, also containing a variegated tulip, appears on the Blackshaw teapot, illustrated and discussed by Stephen Hanscombe, Armorial Porcelain decorated in the London Workshop of James Giles, ECC Trans, Vol 20, Part 1, 2008, p 125 and pl 14
