Little is known about Matvei Prokofievich Ponomarenko, also known as Matvei Ponomarev. Correspondence between the present owner and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg indicates that in the 1860s, Matvei Ponomarenko was one of the art instructors at the Odessa Art School. The letter also suggests that it was a conceit of the artist to sign and date the painting on the tombstone in the centre of the painting.
