Three Caucasian shashkas

19th century
the first: slightly curved, fullered blade engraved with Cyrillic letters 'MN' and running wolf, struck with maker's mark, horn hilt with chased foliage and stylized crown at the finishing end, leather-covered scabbard with four silver mounts with crosses and initials 'KA'; the second: slightly curved, steel blade engraved with a portrait and inscription in Cyrillic 'May you die villain from my hand/ Abdul', hilt with Asian lock decorated with niello, filigree and chasing, leather-covered scabbard with silver and niello mounts; the third: slightly curved, earlier Hungarian fullered steel blade engraved with inscription in Latin script, horn handle with niello silver decoration, leather-covered scabbard with nielloed silver fittings length of first blade: 77cm (30 1/4in).; length of second blade: 75cm (29 1/2in).; length of third blade: 77cm (30 1/4in). Footnotes

The first shashka belonged to a Cossack officer of the Personal Convoy of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich who was Governor of Caucasus in 1863-1881. For similar examples see Oruzhie narodov Kavkaza, St. Petersburg, 2004, page 53.
