An important Caucasian silver-mounted shashka with belt

early 19th century
of the type known as 'Cherkesian galun', slightly curved, with Amudzinskii blade with maker's mark and additional engraved decoration typical for Caucasian work, solid silver-gilt hilt with niello inserts, leather-covered wooden scabbard with substantial silver-gilt mounts with gilded ornaments set against stippled niello grounds, over-
the-shoulder leather belt decorated en suite
length of blade: 92cm (36 1/4in).

Footnotes

The extensive decorations of the mounts on both sides of the shashka indicate the importance and possibly noble status of the former owner.
