Footnotes
For a similar icon by Aarne, see Sotheby's London, 12 June 2008, lot 596.
Archival research suggests this rare work highlights Aarne's technical mastery of painting on enamel, his accomplished depiction of hands and eyes as well as the unique golden hue of the background. While the Fabergé archives document that a large assortment of religious items were produced, very few survived the Communist period.
