A shipbuilders' model of the cable layer ship C/S "Restorer" for the Commercial Cable Co.
British, circa 1902

the hull, built up in lifts in ¼ in.=1 ft. scale, with red painted bottom and grey topsides, the deck fitted with twin raked masts and a single stack; the deck details include double ship's wheel and steering gear, cable laying wheels and running gear at both the bow and stern, gratings, upper bridge with fire buckets, binnacle and Kelvin compass, (8) boats rigged on davits, painted ventilators, skylights, deckhouses and other details. Displayed on four turned brass pedestals, in a later glazed mahogany display case.
105 x 45 x 28-½ in.(267 x 114 x 72.5 cm.) cased.

Footnotes

Built by Armstrong & Whitworth & Co in Newcastle in 1902, the C/S Restorer measured 385.4 ft in length, 44 ft in breadth, 20.9 ft in draft and weighed 3,180 gross tones. She served as a cable laying and repair for the Commercial Cable Company and Western Union Corporation and during her lifetime she laid some 5,000 miles of cable from San Francisco to Singapore , Attu to Australia and China to Fanning Islands. She also worked for the Netherlands East Indies government in Singapore during which time she helped lay the first ever undersea cable to cross the Pacific. The C/S Restorer was scrapped in 1951.
