Romance of the Seas was built for George B. Upton of Boston, by Donald McKay. She was one of the last and fastest extreme clipper ships McKay would build for the California trade. She had an overall length of 140ft, a beam of 39.6ft and a depth of 19.6ft. Her gross tonnage was 1782 tons.
