A well presented boxwood Napoleonic prisoner-of-war ship model of the French 1st rate ship "Napoleon",late 18th century. The hull built up with a wood plug and planked on the hull and deck in boxwood, which has been trunneled. The hull is fitted with a finely carved and polychromed figurehead of Napoleon, the head rails supporting the stem are decorated with rope work and cinched fabric carvings, the waist and gun port bands are lignum vitae, and the outer bulwarks are decorated with a continuation of the rope work and cinched fabric carvings. The quarter galleries and transom are finely carved with neo-classical pillars and baluster turned pillars, which support a double balcony at the stern.

The quarter galleries and transom are finely carved with neo-classical pillars and baluster turned pillars, which support a double balcony at the stern.
A grand staircase leads to the poop deck with canopy, railing and boat hung out on davits over the stern. The model is well rigged with standing and running rigging, turning blocks [most probably later], trees and tops flag and other details. The model is displayed an a pair of small mahogany cradles with a central baluster turned pedestal which conceals the mechanism for the gun retractors. Displayed on a inlaid base with nicely detailed railing [later] within a modern brass trimmed glass case with mahogany base. 24 x 13-¾ x 20-¼ in. (61 x 35 x 51 cm.) cased
