According to the Community's 1938 Inventory p.180, The work was 'Given (1936) by his sister Mrs. Ormond, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea.' The story in the Community is that it was 'done during a cruise, that the church was in Portugal, near the route of the ship, and that Sargent dashed it off and gave it to two women on the boat.'
