Footnotes
From 1857 to 1859, Cropsey sold 16 paintings to E.Gambart and Co. a London printmaking firm that used them to produce a series titled 'American Scenery.'
The present painting is most likely included in an entry from his account book as being sold with four others as 'Spring, Chenango Valley' on July 28, 1859.
The Newington Cropsey Foundation is in possession of two related works. The first, Study for Spring, Chenango Valley 182LC is a 10 1/4 x 16 1/4 oil on canvas also dated 1859. It is a nearly identical work to the present example, but with a more turbulent sky and darker overall tonality. Both are likely preparatory studies for the larger 15 1/4 x 24 oil on canvas of the same scene 1618LC. The larger canvas, however, shares the same light cast of the example presented here.
The fact that these works were intended for engraving may explain why this example was originally unstretched and painted to precisely defined borders with clear margins.
Saleroom notices
'Spring, Chenango' will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work being prepared by Dr. Kenneth Maddox of the Newington Cropsey Foundation. This work is unframed.
