PROVENANCE:
Estate of a Southern Lady
Alice Ravenel Huger Smith was born into a prominent Charleston family in 1876. As an artist, she was largely self-taught and preferred watercolor and etchings as her primary media. She was introduced to tonalism by the artist Birge Harrison who visited Charleston frequently in the early years of the 20th century. She was also profoundly influenced by Japanese prints. Throughout her career, her works were frequently published and exhibited which reinforced her position as a leading figure in the Charleston Renaissance. She died in Charleston in 1958.
