Michael Quick has examined this painting and confirmed its authenticity. It will be included in the forthcoming supplement to his catalogue raisonne of the works of George Inness.

Of this work, Michael Quick writes, "Having carefully studied Woodland and the Distant Valley, it is my definite opinion that this is a genuine work of George Inness. It appears to be a late painting reinterpreting what must have been a Catskill sketch from the late 1860s. I would give it the approximate date of about 1890. The simplification of the composition and the technique of broadly applied layers of colored glazes and opaque paint both mark it as a painting of the final period."
