LITERATURE:
Patricia Janis Broder, Bronzes of the American West, 1974, p.256, 258. Larger version, illustrated p. 257.
This work was produced by The Meriden Britannia (International Silver Company) to commemorate the Philadelphia Centennial of 1876. The work was later exhibited at several other major exhibitions around the country. Originally cast in a larger version, the work became a very popular iconic image, becoming a fixture in the White House collection. The demand for the work resulted in smaller castings being made in 'old silver' and 'gold inlaid'.
