Footnotes
Antoine de Saint Exupéry (1900 - 1944) is most famous for his novel 'The Little Prince'. He is also well-known for being one of the pioneers of international postal flight, in the days when aircraft had few navigation instruments. The engraving on the back features the routes he used to travel from Toulouse to Casablanca. In the 1940's, Saint Exupéry returned to Europe from America, to fly with the Free French Forces and fight with the Allies in a Mediterranean-based squadron. Saint Exupéry's final mission was to collect intelligence on German troops in and around the Rhone Valley. This reconaissance trip preceded the Allied invasion of southern France and was one of the many journeys that has led to his reputation as a war hero. Unfortunately, on July 31, 1944, he took off from an airbase on Corsica and was never to be seen again.
