Footnotes

Panerai’s precision instruments were worn on the wrists of the elite combat divers of Decima Flottiglia Mas during World War Two. The long-term historical collaboration between Panerai and the Italian Navy since the 19th century was celebrated at the launch of the Italian destroyer ‘Luigi Durand de la Penne’ in 1993. At this occasion, a re-designed version of the original Luminor was presented to a select few from the Marina Militare. This model was later launched into commercial production and since then, the 5218 201/A is regarded by many Panerai enthusiasts as an icon of Panerai history, aesthetic and technical design. A particular feature of this model’s dial is the colour aging of the luminous indices which often gradually change from white to a creamy yellow colour, a time effect of the ISO 9/3 Tritium and transparent lacquer applied to make the indices luminescent. There were originally supposed to be a total of 889 watches under this reference but only 677 pieces have been issued.
