Attributed to London, of 'Silver-shape', the cylindrical sconce supported on a knopped stem, flaring at the bottom to form a circular well upon a hexagonal base, painted in light blue with sprays of flowers and leaves, bands of blue around the stem, 17.5cm high (some repair to the rim of the nozzle, with a small section lacking)
Footnotes
Candlesticks in English delft are very uncommon. The shape of this example can be compared to that of a pair of James II silver candlesticks by Anthony Nelme, London 1688-89, to be included in Bonhams Fine Silver Sale on the 8th July 2009. Frank Britton, English Delftware in the Bristol Collection (1982), 1 128, fig 9.5, illustrates another variation of a silver shape candlestick in delft. Another on an octagonal base is in Colonial Williamsburg. Both are 18th century. Louis L.Lipski and Michael Archer, Dated English Delftware (1984), p 354, figs 1559-1563, illustrate four further examples and note, 'Nothing need to be said of delftware candlesticks other than their shapes derive directly from metal prototypes'
