A good Chelsea plate

Circa 1755.
Of 'Silver-shape', finely painted in a soft palette with scattered flower sprays, including a divergent tulip, a ladybird, beetle and a moth amongst the blooms, the scrolling rim outlined in brown, 23.3cm diam (minor rubbing to brown line rim)

Footnotes

It is interesting to compare the flower painting to that of Worcester of circa 1757-58, see The Butti Collection, sold in these rooms, 10 May 2006, lot 50 for a trio, the saucer painted with a similar divergent tulip. While Chelsea's silver shaped oval dishes proved popular throughout the red anchor period, plates of this shape are surprisingly rare

Saleroom notices

Please note, some very fine crazing appears in the form of two star-cracks visible on very close inspection in the centre and side of the well
