Footnotes
Dillwyn's Etruscan Ware was produced at the Cambrian factory between 1848-50, under the proprietorship of Lewis Llewellyn Dillwyn. Inspired by Greek pottery, the aim was to produce inexpensive objects to adorn the homes of the less well off. The ware was made from clay found on the estate of Dillwyn's elder brother at Penllergaer. His wife Bessie (nee de la Beche) is said to have had considerable involvement in the design. The ware is discussed by Mike Lewis, Dillwyn's Etruscan Ware, Welsh Ceramics in Context, Part II, p 247 and E Morton Nance, The Pottery and Porcelain of Swansea and Nantgarw, p 179. For a similarly decorated vase, see E Morton Nance, plate LXXXIIE. See also plate LXXXVID and E for the designs on both sides of the vase. Another similar vase was sold in these rooms on 9 March 2005, lot 163
