A Nantgarw dish by Thomas Pardoe

Circa 1818-20.
Of boat shape, the moulded shell motifs at either end picked out in gold, painted by Thomas Pardoe with a basket of flowers on a stone ledge, a bluetit hanging from a branch above, the flowers including roses, stocks and narcissi, the plinth with carved scrollwork above a gadrooned edge, 27.6cm wide (crack professionally sealed)

Footnotes

Pardoe seems to have favoured this type of dish for this type of decoration. It certainly provides a good flat surface to receive the painting. Related examples are illustrated by W Turner, The Ceramics of Swansea and Nantgarw, pl XX, by W D John, Nantgarw Porcelain, coloured illustrations 48A and 48B and by E Morton Nance, The Pottery and Porcelain of Swansea and Nantgarw, pl CLXXXA. Another was sold in these rooms on 8 September 2004, lot 239.
