A very rare Swansea sauce tureen and cover

Circa 1815-17.
Of shallow circular form, the knop and twin handles formed from naturalistically modelled twigs picked out in gold, the knop with a delicate leaf terminal, locally painted with sprays and sprigs of colourful flowers, including buttercups, bluebells, nasturtiums, speedwell and a fine variegated tulip with petals open to reveal the stamens, within gilded rims, 14.1cm high (3)

Footnotes

This shape of tureen is only very rarely seen with a twig knop. Another example is illustrated by Jones and Joseph, Swansea Porcelain Shapes and Decoration, p 85, shown alongside examples with a butterfly finial and the more often found pineapple finial
