Footnotes

This remarkable specimen was purchased together with the following lot by T.W.Fletcher, the grandfather of the present owner in February 1918. The vases were bought from the china galleries of Waring and Gillow Ltd in Oxford Street. George Owen had died the previous year but because of their high cost, fine vases often remained unsold for a number of years in London retail shops. When he made his purchase, Waring and Gillows agreed to send to Mr Fletcher a copy of one of the publicity photographs, reproduced here. Royal Worcester had provided shops with photographs showing George Owen at work, in order to convince their customers that the vases really were pierced by hand. Because Owen never allowed anyone to see him work, he agreed to pose for a series of staged photographs using already-fired vases
