A pair of Bristol white figures emblematic of 'Summer' and 'Winter'

Circa 1775-78.
From a set of the 'Rustic Seasons', 'Summer' as a young girl, holding a basket filled with flowers, her left arm raised, 'Winter' as a boy, skating with his arms crossed, a basket filled with game around his shoulder, beside tree stumps, on rocky mound bases, the tallest 30cm high, Winter with impressed 'To' to underside of the base for John Toulouse (she with restoration to raised arm, an area chipped and losses to flowers in her hair, the corner of her jacket chipped, he with a small chip to the front spur of his skate) (2)

Footnotes

Peter Bradshaw, 18th Century English Porcelain Figures (1981), p 251, pl 151, illustrates a set of the 'Rustic Seasons' painted in colours. This set of Seasons resemble the Chelsea-Derby models of the 'French Seasons' and were thought, like the Bristol 'Classical Seasons' to be by the Derby modeller Pierre Stephan. The 'To' mark for John Toulouse is found on Worcester porcelain from the early 1770s although it remains unclear when he moved to Bristol and for how long
