Footnotes
The shape appears to be unique in English Porcelain. The holes in the handle are presumably to restrain a cork or stopper of some kind. A similar bottle from the Barbara Leake Collection was sold in these rooms 12 March 2008, lot 299 and illustrated by Christopher Spencer, Early Lowestoft (1981), p 61, figs 73 and 74, together with a vase from which it appears likely that this rare shape was adapted. Also see Bernard Watney, English Blue and White Porcelain (1973), pl 81A and Geoffrey Godden, Lowestoft Porcelains (1985) pl 90, for further examples
