Footnotes

Provenance: The Joseph Handley Collection. Illustrated by Handley, 18th Century English Transfer-Printed Porcelain and Enamels (1991), p 134, fig 4.6 where it is suggested that it is not a Hancock print but may be the work of one of the Holdships. This pattern is unusual as it is found printed over-glaze and also in underglaze blue. John Sandon has suggested it was Josiah Holdship who developed blue printing at Worcester, see John Sandon (1993), pp 194-198. Both Bernard Watney (1963), colour pl B and Branyan, French and Sandon (1981), II.B.4 illustrate a tureen and cover with an early example of the print in underglaze blue. For a teabowl of the pattern also printed in over-glaze black see The Zorka Hodgson Collection, sold in these rooms 10 September 2008, lot 54
